In Memoriam Joseph A. Maciariello – Moving Drucker’s Legacy to the 21st Century
We are deeply saddened by the loss of Prof. Joseph Maciariello, Peter Drucker’s closest collaborator and ally during his years at Claremont, who died on July 1, 2020. Our deepest condolences go to his wife Judy, sons Patrick and Joseph, and their whole family.
A tireless supporter of Peter’s monumental work, Joe made important written contributions of his own to Peter’s legacy, both during and after the latter’s lifetime. He continued Drucker’s work on Management as a Liberal Art (MLA) by developing comprehensive curricula for teaching and learning it: management is “liberal” because it deals with the fundamentals of knowledge, self-knowledge, wisdom and leadership; “art” because it is practice and application. We commend the invaluable support that philanthropist Shao Ming Lo has lent to this fundamental effort. We plan to devote a session at the
2020 Drucker Forum to the leadership aspects of MLA.
In today’s fractured societies, with fundamental values in question, we are more than ever in need of the guidance of our great thinkers to find our way to a different future. In Peter Drucker we possess a spiritual and intellectual mentor second to none to support us in this endeavor; more than anyone, Joseph Maciariello has sought to promote and re-invision
his idea on a well-functioning society based on the principles of freedom, human dignity and self-determination for the 21st century. We are deeply grateful to him.
