Biography

Alexander von Gabain, Chair of the Governing Board of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology, obtained his Ph.D. in Genetics at the University of Heidelberg, was post-doctoral fellow at the Stanford University and in the 1980s/1990s Professor at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, as well as advisor to biotech industries. From 1992 he was Chair of Microbiology of the University of Vienna and helped to build the private public partnership of the Campus Vienna Biocenter, a centre of excellence. In 1998, he co-founded Intercell which he led as CEO until its successful IPO 2005 and continued to work for the company as CSO until 2009. In 2011 he has been re-appointed as member of the Supervisory Board. He is continuing in this position, after Intercell has been merged with Vivalis into the new biotech enterprise, Valneva, listed in Paris and Vienna, but is serving too in the Board of other hightech enterprises. Additionally, he is holding professorships at the University of Vienna and the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. In 2008, he was appointed to the Governing Board of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), which he is chairing since 2011. His achievements have been acknowledged by prestigious industrial awards, academic prizes, honourable memberships, including the Swedish Royal Academy of Engineering Science and latest the European Luminary Innovation award.
