He saw before most the historic switch to a Knowledge Economy and Society. He saw great news a Knowledge Economy and Society meant for employment: “We need an infinite number of people capable of using theory as the basis of skill for practical application in work” – problem solvers.
There is a problem of course in that few educational systems worldwide teach the problem solving now required by the Knowledge Economy and Society.
Clayton Christensen underscored the problem for employers. “Employers want people who have the skills to do the job. Universities don’t understand that job. I really do think that the more we can link the employers with the people who, online, provide the skills, it really will just cause the world to flip.”
He poignantly underscore the problem for educational institutions. “The scary thing is that fifteen years from now, maybe half the universities will be in bankruptcy.”
Drucker also saw the solution: “Online continuing education is creating a new and distinct educational realm,…a market potentially worth hundreds of billions of dollars.”
Businesses as employers know firsthand the problem solving and other skills needed for employment in the Knowledge Economy and Society. They are beginning to set in motion online and otherwise a new educational realm to serve the Knowledge Economy and Society. This will also help existing educational institutions adapt to this profoundly different educational reality, all of which will profoundly enrich societies around the world.
