John I had to read this well written piece a few times to fully understand the points you make.
It is clear that digital technologies will continue to change how we live and work. And there will always be positives and negatives to any new technology for the economic man. Promoting the correct use and best application of new technology will remain a key responsibility of all managers and leaders. If we fail to do that, who knows what future “advances” may deliver.

Very inspired and visionary take, John. We are indeed at the crossroads now with technology:

Machines will either subsume our humanity and we’ll become something else altogether, or they will greatly enhance and enable our humanity. I suspect a little bit of both, depending on the situation.

What we do next, in terms of laying the civic, cultural, and even legal and regulatory enablement of realized imagination, is going to determine who the real winners in the near future are.

Because those who don’t flinch from exploring and realizing the possibilities of this new ear will gain a likely unbeatable lead.

Coming back from a meeting this morning on the future vision of the City of Dresden, and #SEMICONEuropa 2015 (a yearly trade fair in Dresden and Grenoble focusing on microelectronics) just a few weeks ahead it once again became quite clear:

Technology, especially digital, might bring great value to humanity, yet citizens and future users, benefiters must be involved, and their voice, fear and expectations have to be included in shaping a prosperous future.

It will be an ongoing learning journey, challenging, refreshing, and sometimes even frustrating.

Why not prototype our way from the dip what I would already a kind of singularity, where manual and digital processes are setting a gap in daily work environment, and that can be seen with all the changes in society due to the inflow of refugees here in Western Europe for the last months especially.

Thanks John for pointing out this all can be also a positive excitement for all of us making suitable use of technology that fits into our cultural boundaries and realities.
