I like your challenge to rethink what “monopoly” really means. Here’s my perspective: as all the cost barriers have faded as you’ve described, the importance of brand has increased.
Of course I mean brand as a non-conscious emotional shortcut to choice rather than the superficial meaning of ‘brand’ as a logo / visual device.
Are we seeing the emergence of monopolies of attention, emotion and habit?
