In Praise of the Human Advantage A bright silver lining of the 2020 Drucker Forum’s move to Zoom and livestream was that 4500 people could take part – far and away a record attendance. Just as exhilarating for the team was our accelerated learning about the crafting of engaging virtual sessions, which we shall carry forward to 2021. Take advantage of the holiday season to check out the reports and videos of the Forum sessions. Next year’s Forum, under the theme of The Human Imperative – Navigating Uncertainty in the Digital Age, will engage directly with challenges to our pandemic-rocked institutions. Two digital-age temptations threaten to take us down a technology-centric path. First, the siren song of data-driven decision-making – believing that human judgment can be sidelined by computer models and their inevitable flaws. Second, the impulse in a time of crisis to ram through revolutionary change – or as some would say, to engineer a “great reset” of social systems. Both run deeply counter to the nature of human communities which, as Drucker always stressed, favor meaningful change balanced with continuity. The 13th GPDF will take place on November 17–19 2021. Make the date in your diary now and look forward to a rich mixture of online presentations complemented by two days of traditional face-to-face sessions in Vienna.
To you and your loved ones, best wishes for good health, a merry Christmas, and a joyful holiday season. Richard Straub and the Drucker Forum Team |
